Boughton Lees Carpet Bowls Club Page

The Club was started in 1990 as part of the Iron Room Management Committee's intent of making greater use of the village hall. The Committee made a loan of £75 to the Club so that they could purchase the equipment to get play under way. The loan was repaid when the Club received a grant from Ashford Borough Council.

There are three variations of the game of indoor bowls. Due to the length of the hall the Club plays the version involving the shortest mat which is 30 feet long. We have two mats (see photograph), thus enabling up to 16 players to be in play at anyone time. Unlike the other two versions of the game, you do not need any of your own equipment to start playing the game at the Iron Room. All we ask is that you wear a pair of soft-soled shoes so that the mats are not unduly worn or damaged.

The Club is purely a social one at heart, so it helps to have a sense of humour. We do not play matches with other clubs on a league basis due to the fact that there are very few, if any, other Clubs in East Kent playing the Carpet version of the game. We do, however, play other local clubs in friendly matches from time to time. When we play away it is the Short Mat version that prevails. For some members this comes naturally as they are also members of other local clubs playing this version. When we play at the Iron Room it is amusing to see the visiting club players struggling to cope with the shortened version of their normal game.

Our annual dinner and awards and presentations are held in December. Pairs and triples competitions are also held during the year. The main advantage of such competitions is that any member can be part of a winning team no matter what their standard of play may be.

The game is equally suited to ladies and gentlemen of all ages and abilities. If you would like to try it, do come along to the Iron Room at 7.00 pm on any Wednesday, when you will be most welcome. Alternatively, you can telephone the Secretary (see below) for further information. The Club membership at present is 20. The Officers of the Club are.
